Mission Statement:

Our mission is to educate the public on the ways in which everyone can contribute to sustaining the Earth in small but meaningful ways.  We will educate by working actively in the community, offering different programs and providing educational items.

Areas of Activity:

P     Plant Pollinator Pathways

L     Leave plastic behind

A     Always reduce, reuse and recycle

N     Nurture our Native plants

E     Eliminate plastic

T      Try composting

Start by Taking the Conservation Pledge:

Complete this pledge to do your part in conserving our natural resources and protecting our native environment.  Below are a list of things to start your journey of conservation.

I PROMISE TO (choose one or two items from each category):

Water:

  1. To turn off the water when I brush my teeth or wash dishes.

  2. To take short showers and avoid baths.

  3. To not water my lawn during the summer – it will grow back.

  4. To water my plants or garden in the early morning or late afternoon when it is cooler and water is less likely to evaporate.

Energy:

  1. To turn off the lights when not in the room.

  2. To turn off other electronic devices when not in use.

  3. To be purposeful when getting things out of the Refrigerator or Freezer and not leave them open for extended periods.

  4. Keep your house cool naturally by closing windows and blinds during the heat of the day and opening them during the evening when the temperature has cooled.

  5. If using air conditioning, to use it minimally and at a normal summer temperature such as 78 degrees.

  6. In the winter, minimize your use of resources by keeping your heat at 68 degrees and wear a sweater.

Waste:

  1. To use reusable bags when shopping.

  2. To recycle items as much as possible.   I will fix broken items instead of throwing them away, donate items that are still good but unwanted and to find other uses.  I will minimize what I throw away.

  3. To recycle my clothing and other cloth items by donating them to Helpsy (bin at recycling center or at the old COA.

  4. To purchase items from secondhand stores so that I am reusing materials and I am also avoiding import taxes!

  5. To pack my lunch using a reusable container and use a reusable water bottle.

  6. To not buy plastic straws; there are alternatives, such as bamboo.

  7. To not throw my food waste into the trash by not buying too much food and letting it go to waste.  When I have too much, I will freeze it, find a farm willing to take my extra greens for their animals, or compost it.

Air:

  1. To bike or walk when possible (e.g. between stores).

  2. To carpool or take public transportation

  3. To use natural cleaners instead of chemicals (it’s better for my health too)

Land:

  1. To practice “leave no trace” principles.

  2. To pick up trash in my neighborhood (and participate in Earth Day!)

  3. To put trash in the trash can and not on the ground.

  4. To not use pesticides on my plants thus not killing beneficial insects that we need for our plants to grow!

  5. To avoid using herbicides, particularly spraying- it affects more than just what you are spraying (e.g. you).
